FAH Cosmos
Founded in 1991, Friendship Asia House Cosmos ("FAH Cosmos") acts as a shelter for mainly unwed non-Japanese mothers and their half-Japanese children. It is a sister organization to Nonohana-no-ie under Ichiryu-kai. The residents of FAH Cosmos come from various countries including Cambodia, Iran, the Philippines, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Taiwan and Korea, many of whom are the victims of domestic violence who have no visas and no birth certificates for their children.

Ms. Misao Hanazaki, the founder and Director of FAH Cosmos states, "Japan accepts foreign workers who are in search of a better life. Yet their fundamental human rights in terms of living and surviving in this country are still largely unprotected". It is particularly challenging for single non-Japanese mothers to live in a homogenous culture with little to or no support from their Japanese partners.

The mission statement of FAH Cosmos includes the following:

-- To provide a warm, secure temporary refuge for the foreign residents and their children in need;
-- To assist with issues on divorce settlements, child custody , visa processing, family matters and so on;
-- To advise on child-rearing practices, finances, cross-cultural issues when living in Japan and personal communications; and
-- To provide referrals for employment, housing, Japanese language lessons and other means to help the women become independent.
